The Data Protection Act gives individuals certain rights regarding information held about them.The Act imposes certain obligations on those that process personal data (Data Controllers) They are required to comply with eight data protection principles. These principles state that personal data must be:

- processed for specified purposes
- adequate, relevant and not excessive
- accurate and up-to-date
- not kept for longer than necessary
- processed in accordance with the individual's rights
- processed securely
- not transferred outside the EEA unless the destination country has adequate protection
